The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has approved the appointment of Justice Babatunde Adeniran Adejumo as the new Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI).
Justice Adejumo, a pioneer and former President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, will assume office on August 1, 2025. His appointment follows the endorsement by the Board of Governors of the NJI, which is chaired by the CJN.
A statement by the CJN’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Tobi Soniyi, confirmed that the appointment complies with the provisions of the National Judicial Institute Act and was made after due consultation with the NJI Board.
Justice Adejumo will succeed Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, whose four-year tenure as Administrator ends on July 31, 2025. The CJN commended Justice Abdullahi for his “tireless commitment and invaluable contributions to the growth of the Institute and the Nigerian judiciary.”
Justice Adejumo brings to the position a wealth of experience as a respected jurist and accomplished judicial administrator. He led the National Industrial Court until his retirement in 2019 and is widely known for his reforms in labour jurisprudence.
According to Mr. Soniyi, the new NJI boss’ vast experience and in-depth understanding of judicial processes are expected to bolster the Institute’s mandate of promoting capacity building, professional excellence, and innovation within the judiciary.
The NJI serves as Nigeria’s foremost institution for the continuing education, training, and development of judicial officers and their support staff. Through regular workshops, conferences, and specialised programmes, the Institute seeks to improve the quality, efficiency, and ethical standards of judicial service delivery across the country.
Justice Adejumo’s appointment marks a new chapter in the NJI’s journey towards strengthening the judiciary through knowledge, discipline, and best practices.
