The High Court of Justice in Akure was charged with tension on Thursday as Justice Sunday Olorundahunsi granted stay of execution in two high-profile suits involving the Ondo State Commissioner for Finance, Mrs. Omowumi Isaac, and the Ondo State House of Assembly.
The orders effectively suspend the enforcement of earlier rulings delivered on September 11, 2025, pending the determination of appeals filed by the state government.
The disputed rulings had favoured legal practitioner Mr. Emodamori in Suit No: HCAK/294/CIV/2025 against the Finance Commissioner, and in Suit No: HCAK/299/CIV/2025 against the House of Assembly, its Speaker, and Clerk.
Leading the government’s legal team, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, urged the Court to restrain the Respondent from taking steps to enforce the judgments until appellate review. The court granted the applications, giving both the Ministry of Finance and the Assembly temporary relief.
Ajulo dismissed suggestions that Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration had ever disregarded court orders, stressing the government’s firm respect for the rule of law.
“There has never been, and there will never be, any instance where this government disregards a valid court order under my watch as Attorney General,” he declared. “Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration is anchored on justice, fairness, and due process.”
The Attorney General further commended the Court and reaffirmed that every action of the government would continue to align with judicial authority, insisting that respect for the courts is the foundation of good governance.
